There have been countless strong and powerful films made around the theme of suburban loneliness, and this movie belongs to that genre. Perry fills it with a lot of visual touches that were very typical of middle-brow, late-60's art cinema, and it really buries the film under a load of extraneous nonsense. They use an abandoned, empty pool, which Ned urges the boy to imagine is filled with water. I like Lancaster in this film, but I can't say I like the film very much. Ned asks her to join him, and Joan is intrigued until she's warned off by a friend. It's apparent that everybody wants a piece of him, whether to possess him or chew him up and spit him out. Everyone he meets has not seen him in a long time.
